A 42-year old Scottsburg woman has been charged with drug possession and attempted murder after her live-in boyfriend was shot with a .22 caliber handgun at their near northside apartment on Friday afternoon, Apr. 5.

Racheal Ann McKinney of Village Apartments on York Road in Scottsburg is charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, criminal recklessness, aggravated battery, and attempted murder after she allegedly shot her boyfriend, Brian Guffey, in the chest and upper arm.

According to the probable cause affidavit, neighbors reported that the couple could be heard arguing frequently.

According to Scottsburg Police Officer Greg Green, he was dispatched around 1:30 p.m. to the 900 block of West York Road on the report of a male being shot. She he arrived he observed Guffey on the ground and a neighbor standing close to the victim.

Guffey was treated at the scene by Scott County EMS then transported to Scott Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to UofL Hospital in Louisville for treatment.

Officer Green interviewed McKinney at the scene and the court document reported he observed her comments as irrational and incoherent.

SPD Major Steven Herald interviewed McKinney at the police station and, according to the probable cause, McKinney acknowledged smoking methamphetamine earlier in the day. She reported the couple were arguing over a meth pipe in the bedroom when the argument escalated.

McKinney told Herald that Guffey began yelling and threatening her and her family. McKinney said Guffey pulled out a gun and pointed it at her. According to the court document she went to a closet, got her .22 caliber gun and allegedly fired four shots striking Guffey twice.

ISP crime scene technicians found a bag of methamphetamine along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside the apartment, according to the court document.

McKinney was booked into the Scott County Jail around 7:30 p.m. April 5. On Tuesday, April 9, Scott Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount set McKinney’s bond at $500,000 full cash. As of the newspaper’s press deadline she remains in custody.
