The Scott County Sheriff’s Office issued a warning to residents about a phone scam that is targeting the community.
Scammers are posing as Sheriff’s Office deputies and contacting residents about supposed criminal complaints, warrants, fines, or penalties. The callers then attempt to convince victims that they can avoid further legal consequences by making a payment over the phone.
“Don’t fall for it. Hang up!” said Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin. “The Scott County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER, under my watch, call a citizen over the phone regarding a criminal complaint and offer to accept a payment to satisfy the complaint.”
Goodin said his office has received calls recently from community members who have either been targeted by this scam or have unfortunately fallen victim to it. These criminals are skilled at creating a sense of fear and urgency, hoping to pressure good people into making quick decisions without taking the time to verify the information, said the sheriff.
Residents are reminded:
•The Scott County Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment over the phone to resolve a criminal complaint.
•Do not provide personal, financial, banking, or credit/debit card information to an unsolicited caller.
•Do not allow a caller to pressure or intimidate you into making an immediate payment.
•If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from law enforcement, hang up and independently verify the information.
•Remember that scammers may use official-sounding language, names, badge numbers, and other information to make their story appear legitimate.
Chief Deputy Joe Guarneri emphasized the importance of remaining cautious.
“Everyone, please be careful when speaking with anyone about your business over the phone and do not fall for these scams.,” said Guarneri. “Criminals are sly when trying to cheat good people. Err on the side of caution – hang up the phone! Always know we are here to help you in any way we can.”
