A 19-year old Seymour man has been charged with animal cruelty after he abandoned a cat in a cage at a campsite along the White River at Rockford.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Settle was dispatched to the Rockford Bridge north of Seymour on the report of animal cruelty. Settle learned with the help from area citizens and located a deceased cat at an abandoned campsite.

Witnesses said Christopher Russell Spurlin, 19, of the 200 block of Kessler Blvd. in Seymour had several dogs and a cat at the campsite for several weeks. They reported that before the cold weather came to the area in January, Spurlin removed the dogs but left the cat in a cage.
Witnesses said Spurlin had not been to the campsite to check on the cat for two to three weeks.
When Settle interviewed Spurlin he admitted to leaving the cat at the campsite.
Spurlin was booked into Jackson County Jail where he faces a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty in Jackson Superior Court 1.
“This arrest reflects a deputy who refused to walk away,” said Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer. ”He spoke with witnesses and held someone accountable for animal cruelty.”
