Tip Lands Three in Scott County Jail On Drug Charges

Acting on a citizen’s tip, Indiana State Police officers went to a home at 505 West Cherry Street in Austin on April 9 after receiving information that a man wanted in Washington County was hiding, ISP Sgt. Jerry Goodin said.
Troopers and officers from the Austin City Police searched the house for Travis Lee McCleery, who was wanted in Washington County for possession of methamphetamine. “While searching for McCleery, pieces of drug paraphernalia were located in the home,” said Goodin. “That discovery prompted troopers to obtain a search warrant for the residence.”
During the search, several used syringes and other pieces of drug paraphernalia with methamphetamine residue were located.
Police found McCleery hiding behind a panel in the insulation of the attic, Goodin said
Travis McCleery, 36, of Scottsburg, Misty Dawn Collins, 30, of Austin and Charles McIntosh, 58, of Austin were arrested and transported to the Scott County Jail. Approximately three grams of Methamphetamine was located on Misty Collins at the jail,
•McCleery was incarcerated for two counts of possession of methamphetamine, two counts of possession of a syringe, visiting a common nuisance, resisting law enforcement, and possession of paraphernalia.
•Collins was charged with visiting a common nuisance, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a syringe, false informing, assisting a criminal, and possession of paraphernalia.
•McIntosh was charged with maintaining a common nuisance.

Elementary Music Program Friday

The Crothersville Elementary School Students will be presenting “Spring Into the Possibilities” this Friday, April 20, at 1 p.m. in the CHS gymnasium. The production is under the direction of Mrs. Carolyn Weddle & Tracy Karnes.
“The public is welcome to attend and see what students have learned over the last few months,” said Karnes. Non-school personnel will need to enter and sign in through the Elementary Doors to attend.

Community Yard Sale May 5

The Greater Crothersville Community Wide Yard Sale will be Saturday, May 5, according to Curt Kovener, editor of the Crothersville Times, an organizer of the semi-annual event.

The Battle Is Ongoing; The War Will Never Be Won

The brown wilderness hills and valleys are greening up. And that is my sign to get to work.
The first plant life to leaf out in the forests after winter are invasives. The one’s that you don’t want taking over: plants like multiflora rose and autumn olive. They both turn green before the native ground level flora so they are easily seen to try to control. Wait too long then everything is green and work becomes more difficult.
In spring green up, I use my long handle loppers and a small spray bottle of herbicide. The long handle loppers keep me away from the always-prickly rose thorns. The leaves may be tender but the cat claw-like thorns are always looking for an arm, a leg, or face. So sometimes I still am successful at getting tangled in the barbed wire like strands after cutting the invasive stalk near the ground.
After untanglement, a sprits or two from the herbicide bottle on the invasive stump should curtail future growth for the coming season.
But there will be more. There will always be more. That is why these plants are called invasives.
Their origin in Indiana is interesting…though the originators don’t like to talk about it.
Back in the 1930’s multiflora rose was recommended to cattle farmers as a way to reduce fence repair and contain their herds by planting a living fence. The problem was that when Purdue University made that recommendation, they forgot to tell the multiflora rose it was supposed to stay in the fence row.
The autumn olive was promoted as a wildlife food source and a butterfly attracting plant. And it does both quite well. It was endorsed by the Indiana DNR and included in their forestry wildlife planting packets distributed by the DNR Nursery in Vallonia. That’s how I got it started in the wilderness.
Birds eat the olive size fruit and then distribute the seed wherever they roost. That explains why I see abundant autumn olive growing along the understory of trees along the edge of the forest.
So my continual battle with these two invasives will be never ending. And as I cut and sprits, I contemplate just what other ‘helpful’ recommendations Purdue and DNR have in store for us.

Notice to Bidders

Notice is hereby given that the Board of Directors of the Jackson County Water Utility, Inc. will receive sealed bids for the 2018 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT as briefly described below (the “Project”). Sealed bids will be received by the Board of Directors of Jackson County Water Utility, Inc., at the utility office 1119 W. Spring Street, Brownstown, IN 47220-1037 until 4:00 p.m. local time on MONDAY, MAY 21, 2018. Bids will be publicly opened and read aloud at that time. No late bids will be accepted and all bids received after 4:00 p.m. local time on May 21, 2018, will remain sealed and will be returned to sender unopened.
A MANDATORY PRE-BID CONFERENCE shall be held on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. The Pre-Bid meeting shall be held at the Jackson County Water Utility, Inc., office located at 1119 W. Spring Street, Brownstown, IN 47220-1037.
The Project consists of, but is not necessarily limited to, approximately 5+ miles of 10” SDR 21 PVC water main, 5+ miles of 8” SDR 21 PVC water main, 20+ miles of 6” SDR 21 PVC water main, and 3+ miles of 4” SDR 21 PVC water main. Method of construction is primarily open cut, with some areas of HDD installation. Project includes special crossings requiring jack and bore of steel casing (Interstate 65 in two locations, one railroad crossing, and several State Road crossings). Water main project shall extend water to areas that have no existing water utility service. Project shall include water mains, valves, hydrants, fittings and accessories, per plans and specifications. These items of work contain other miscellaneous items necessary and as specified to make this project complete.
All bids and proposals shall be properly and completely executed on the proposal forms provided with the plans and specifications, which will include the Non-Collusion Affidavit as required by the State of Indiana and Indiana State Board of Accounts Form 96 (revised 2013) including an Owner provided attachment thereto. The bid envelope must be sealed and have the words “BID – 2018 WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS” on the outside of the envelope.
A bid bond or certified check in an amount not less than FIVE percent (5%) of the amount bid must be submitted with each bid. Bid security shall be forfeited if a bid is withdrawn after the time and date set for receiving bids. Upon award of a contract but prior to the execution of a contract between the Jackson County Water Utility, Inc., and the Contractor, the Contractor shall provide a one hundred-twenty percent (120%) performance bond and one hundred percent (100%) payment bond. Any performance bond or labor and materials bond must remain in force for at least one (1) year beyond issuance of the Certificate of Substantial Completion. It is intended that actual construction of all work divisions shall be started as soon as practicable, and each bidder shall be prepared to enter promptly into a construction contract, furnish a performance and payment bond, and begin work without delay in the event the award is made to that bidder. Any bond submitted must be from a surety company authorized to do business in the State of Indiana.

No bidder may withdraw any bid or proposal within a period of sixty (60) days following the date set for receiving bids or proposals. The Owner reserves the right to reject any and all bids, to reject bids that do not meet the qualifications outlined in this Notice or in the bidding documents and to waive any formalities or irregularities in the bidding process or in any bid. The Owner further reserves the right to reject all bids, should the Owner determine, in the opinion of the Owner Council based on the bids received, that the contemplated cost of construction is not economically feasible. The Owner reserves the right to hold any or all bids or proposals for a period of not more than sixty (60) days and said bids or proposal shall remain in full force and effect during said period. The Owner reserves the right to reject and/or cancel any and all bids, solicitations and/or offers in whole or in part as specified in the solicitations.
