Due to the Indiana Legislature eliminating a utility tax, Scottsburg electric customers will be a decrease in their electric charges later this summer, according to a legal notice in this week’s Crothersville Times.
The utility receipts tax levied on retail sales of the electric utility were repealed effective this coming July 1.
“Therefore, the City’s electric rates have been adjusted to remove this tax,” said clerk-treasurer Jan Hardy.
The Utility Receipts Tax (URT) was historically 1.4% of retail receipts. The Indiana Legislature voted to repeal the URT and on March 15, 2022, Governor Eric Holcomb signed into law HEA 1002, which repeals the URT levied on retail receipts of certain utilities, including the Scottsburg’s city owed utility.
Removal of the URT results in an average decrease in the City’s electric rates of 1.4%, and customers can expect to see the decrease in their electric bills in August, the legal notice read.
