A national chain of discount variety stores is hoping to build on Austin’s westside.
Dollar Tree, a Fortune 500 company, operates over 15,100 store nationwide and Canada.
The retailer, through its property development arm DPG Single Tenant Indiana LLC, hopes to build at 587 West Main St. (State Road 256) and has petitioned the city to vacate an east-west alley and a portion of 6th Street from Main to Cherry Street.
The City of Austin has scheduled a public hearing on the petition for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, at city hall, according to a legal notice on page 8 of this week’s Crothersville Times and online at www.crothersvilletimes.com.
The properties, located at 587 West Main, 572 & 590 West Cherry, are currently owned by Tex Murphy. The western properties owner across Sixth Street from the proposed construction area is the Austin Redevelopment Commission.
The company proposes to build a 10,000 sq. ft Dollar Tree if the vacation petition is approved.
“Dollar Tree is not located in the city of Austin so this will provide a new option for shoppers in this area,” said Michael Delaney, manager of DPG Single Tenant Indiana LLC. “It will also be a source of revenue through additional tax dollars spent in the city along with creating new jobs.”
If their petition is approved, the developer will provide a shared driveway with the Austin Redevelopment.
According to Delaney, the RDC is supporting the vacation of the street to allow for the development of the parcels to the east.
