A routine traffic stop for speeding resulted in the driver, Brian Heath Jones, 56, of Seymour facing charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

While on patrol last Wednesday, Jan. 10, Crothersville Police officer Jacob Sharp clocked a black Ford Crown Victoria going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone on US 31 near 400 S (Retreat Road). Pulling the vehicle over, the driver was identified as Brian Jones of rural Seymour.

CPD officer Zach Elliott arrived at the scene to assist and Sharp told Elliot that Jones “was moving around a lot inside the vehicle when he was pulling over and after the vehicle had stopped,” according to the probable cause affidavit.

After the officers had the driver exit the vehicle, CPD Chief Matt Browning and his K9 partner Lunya did an exterior walk around the vehicle. According to the court document, Lunya had “a change in behavior on the driver side doors and right rear of the vehicle”.

Officers Elliott and Sharp searched Jones vehicle and found shortened straws with a white crystal substance residue inside of it. Officers searched Jones and found a similar shortened straw inside Jones coat pocket.

While Jones was being taken to Jackson County Jail, Elliott discovered a glass pipe between the driver seat and center console of Jones’ car loaded with a while crystal substance.

Later at the jail, deputies tested the contents of the pipe which came back positive for methamphetamine.

Jones was booked into Jackson County Jail at 4:44 p.m. on Jan. 10.

On Friday, Jackson County Prosecutor Jeff Chalfant charged Jones with felony possession of methamphetamine and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He bonded out of jail at 6:23 p.m. Jan. 12.
