Detectives from the Indiana State Police-Sellersburg Post were requested by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department to begin an investigation after an inmate in the Jackson County Jail was found unresponsive in his jail cell.
The initial investigation indicated that Jackson County Jail Inmate Amuel Adam Hall, 44, of Norman had been arrested Aug. 5 for carrying a handgun while a felon, resisting law enforcement, and disorderly conduct and had remained incarcerated in the jail until he was found unresponsive in his housing area on Sunday, Aug. 16, around 10 p.m.
Upon finding him unresponsive, jail staff immediately began rendering first aid and contacted local EMS and fire department personnel, according to ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles. Hall was transported to Schneck Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.
The investigation has indicated that Hall was alone in his housing area when he became unresponsive and there is no indication that foul play on the part of any other inmates or jail staff occurred prior to him going unresponsive.
The circumstances of Hall’s death remain unclear. The investigation continues with the results of the autopsy and toxicology tests are still pending.
Hall is the fourth person known to have died in custody at Jackson County Jail since 2021.
On July 25 Richard Cox, 47, was found unresponsive in his cell and was flown to a hospital in Indianapolis for treatment where he later died,.
In August 2021 Joshua McLemore, 29, died of multiple organ failure caused by dehydration and malnutrition after spending nearly three weeks naked in a padded isolation cell, according to a federal lawsuit.
In July 2021, Ta’Neesha Chappell, 23, of Louisville, KY died after being transported from jail to Schneck Medical Center. A separate lawsuit alleges that Chappel repeatedly vomited blood while in custody and sought medical help for hours before receiving treatment,
