It almost sounds like the set-up line to an old joke: A drunk man walks into jail to bail his buddy out.

But is actually happened last Tuesday, April 7, according to Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

Alejandro Asencio Alomar

He was called to the jail lobby on the report of a strong smell of alcohol to talk with Alejandro Asencio Alomar, 44, of the 3800 block of Williamsburg Court in Columbus who came into the jail to post bail for an inmate.

Alomar admitted to the sheriff that he drove to the sheriff’s office and told the county’s top law enforcement officer where his car was parked. Checking with the jail surveillance video the sheriff confirmed that Alomar did drive to the jail.

Deputy Alan Jones confirmed the signs of intoxication and Alomar’s blood alcohol was tested to be .228%. Jones charged Alomar with driving under the influence. A chargeable BAC is .08%

“I can’t believe someone would drive to the Sheriff’s Office with a blood alcohol content almost three times the legal limit,” said Meyer.

Alomar was able to bond out the individual he intended to but in the meantime he was incarcerated in Jackson County Jail himself, Meyer reported.
