What to do with a road that was platted but never paved, forgotten about, has a house and outbuildings residing on it current day and has never been used in the Town of Crothersville’s 129-year history?
That was the problem presented to the Crothersville Town Council last week at their monthly July meeting.
Kiewit Avenue runs east and west in the between South Kovener Street and Bethany Road between Rider Avenue and Main Street. But don’t look for it on any plat map of this century. It isn’t there.
Crothersville Town council President Danieta Foster said the street was discovered during easement searches for the recently begun state mandated CSO remediation at the wastewater treatment plant.
“It starts where Hominy Ditch flows at Kovener Street,” Foster said. “About the only thing to do about it is to vacate the street.”
“If it hasn’t been used in over 120 years, has buildings on it and we’re just now finding out about it, I don’t think the town has any use for it,” said councilman Jamy Greathouse.
The council agreed to begin legal procedures to vacate the two-block long 45-foot wide avenue. Town attorney Matt Lorenzo said that the street would be divided and given to each seven adjoining property owners.
The town council will consider the matter at their August 3 meeting.
