A Washington County man was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital following a collision with an off-duty Salem police officer on Sunday afternoon, Sept 21.
Around 4 p.m., the Salem Police Department requested assistance from the Indiana State Police to investigate a crash at the intersection of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road, near Canton. Trooper Brett Walters responded to the scene to conduct the investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that Officer Tony England, an off-duty Salem Police Department officer, was driving a department cruiser westbound on Old State Road 56 and was preparing to turn left onto North Canton Road. Meanwhile, a bicyclist, Terry L. Eagle, 60, was traveling eastbound on Old State Road 56, approaching the intersection. As Officer England began his left turn onto Canton Road, he failed to see the bicycle and struck Eagle.
Eagle sustained injuries in the collision and was transported by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Salem before being airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Authorities do not believe that alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.
