A vehicle exceeding the speed limit on US 31 caught the attention of a Crothersville Police officer on Tuesday, July 15, and resulted in the driver being charged with several drug related charges.

Brittany Baker

Brittany Nicole Baker, 37, of Austin was clocked by officer Zach Elliott going 64 in a 55 mph zone. Elliott followed Baker north on I-65 and pulled her over on the exit ramp at Uniontown.

Before stopping, Elliott reported that Baker threw something out the vehicle window.

When Elliott asked Baker if there was anything illegal in her vehicle, “Brittany took a long pause and stated no,” according to the officer who then had his K-9 partner Bora do a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. The dog alerted near the driver’s door, Elliott reported.

Baker told the officer that someone left a bag in her back seat and she did not know what was in it. As Crothersville Chief of Police Matt Browning searched the vehicle he located a black bag which contained 7.38 grams of the white rock like substance that later tested positive for methamphetamine, 12 syringes, three glass smoking pipes, three cut blue straws, and a set of digital scales that contained residue.

After placing her under arrest, Elliott asked her if she had anything illegal in or on her. “Brittany stated she did not think so but may have a baggie in her bra,” the officer reported.

Though the officer told her not to reach for it, she retrieved the baggie from her bra which Elliott confiscated and was found to contain a brown substance that tested positive for fentanyl.

Baker was booked in to Jackson County Jail at 12:49 p.m. charged with dealing methamphetamine, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a syringe,  and maintaining a common nuisance. As of the Times press deadline, she remains incarcerated.
