Sheriff Mike Carothers said several county businesses have been the target of telephone scams.
“Businesses have reporting getting a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative of Duke Energy,” said the sheriff. “The small business owner is being advised that they are late on the electric bill and must pay by phone to keep their service.”
Duke energy has been contacted and they are aware of the scame and said their company does not telephone customers demanding money.
“Do not give any personal information over the phone and call the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department (812-358-2141) if you feel a scam has been attempted,” said Carothers.
