On Monday, June 29, at 10:19 a.m., Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the vicinity of the Knob Stone Trailhead near Leota in southwestern Scott County near the Scott-Washington County line, in reference to an abandoned vehicle. When they arrived, Deputies located the vehicle and began conducting an investigation at the scene.
Indiana Conservation Officers were notified and responded to the area to assist with the search.
A deceased male was discovered during the search. The body was recovered and a forensic examination was scheduled, seeking a possible cause of death and a positive identification of the remains.
Following the autopsy, Sheriff Jerry Goodin said on July 1 that authorities believe the deceased is Brian Brooks. Court records listed Brooks’ address of rural Lexington in Jefferson County.
However police are awaiting the results of the forensic examination, toxicology, and DNA testing to confirm. Due to the State Police crime lab backup, those results will not be known for 6-8 weeks, according to the sheriff.
Goodin did report that the death is not believed to be a result of foul play.
The investigation is ongoing.
