A man suspected of firing a shotgun and injuring a clerk at the Jackson County Public Library in Seymour around noon last Wednesday was booked into jail at 3:20 p.m.
Emiliano Cuevas-Bravo, 18, of Seymour faces two counts of attempted murder, one count of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and intimidation.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said Cuevas-Bravo, a student at Seymour High School, approached the front of the building, entered the first set of doors and then fired a shotgun through the secondary glass windows. A single shotgun pellet struck a library clerk at the circulation desk. The clerk was taken by Jackson County EMS to Schneck Medical Center for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
Police said Cuevas-Bravo went up to the second floor where a library patron tackled him and held him down until authorities arrived.
According to Wheeles, Seymour Police arrived at the library within minutes of being notified of the active shooter.
After the library was closed and cleared, police went inside in tactical gear as a precaution to make sure the shooter’s bag didn’t contain a bomb, Wheeles said.
No motive has been released and the investigation is still ongoing.
As a precaution, Seymour Community Schools went on lockdown during the incident.
Wheeles said additional information gathered during the investigation indicated that Cuevas-Bravo went to Seymour High School earlier in the morning to initially target a Seymour Police Department School Resource Officer. Cuevas-Bravo never entered the school or made contact with the officer before he eventually left and went to the library.
The Seymour, Crothersville and Medora libraries were all closed following the incident and will remain closed for some time, according to library director Julia Aker.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are involved in the investigation
