Scottsburg City Council unanimously passed on all three readings an amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance adding and regulating extended stay hotels within the city’s jurisdiction during their regular meeting on Monday, Aug. 28.

Scottsburg City Attorney Josh Stigdon told the council that the zoning change was for local hotels acting like apartments instead of being a place to stay for tourists or visitors to the city. There has been some assistance from the state fire marshal’s office to look into the hotels to see if they comply with the state code, he said.

The change of zoning would allow people to stay for an extended stay of 30 days but after the 30 days, the guest will not be able to stay at the room they previously were.

The zoning change also lists the minimum facilities in the extended stay accommodations. Each unit must be at least 360 square feet.

The Scottsburg City Area Plan Commission (APC) earlier passed this zoning change with a favorable recommendation, Stigdon told the council.

Council President Ric Manns said that the APC board was in favor of the council to pass it, and get it in the ordinance, so action could be immediate.

“Getting something on the books is a priority, said council member Christian Evans.

The council voted unanimously on the first reading and amended the agenda to pass the zoning change on the second and third reading to hasten the amended ordinances effective date.
