Scott County Commissioners met Thursday, June 23, in a special meeting after it was learned that the plans by the structural engineer to make repairs on the courthouse roof support beam have to be sent to Homeland Security for approval.
The commissioners had to declare the repairs as an emergency for the purposes of special purchases, said County Attorney Zach Stewart.
The date that was decided for when the emergency occurred was April 20.
County Commissioner President Mike Jones said, “I just want to clarify something when I said circumvent, which means sometimes you are trying to skirt the law or whatever. And I would like to change that, … you know that we are doing everything legally here.”
“You all have taken steps to make sure that we got a smooth transition to get the design release from the structural engineers,” said Stewart.
Stewart also commented that the design from the structural engineer have been sent in to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and now are waiting a design release to be able to start on the structural repairs needed.
“It would take 7 to 10 days to get that release,’ said Jones.
The commissioners also made a decision to go with Thomas Plastic Machinery of Scottsburg to make the structural repairs and Royalty Roofing of Seymour to remove the roof to the original roof structure.
“I would like to see them get started as soon as they get started, Commissioner John Lizenby said. “I would like the first thing they do is put the support beams up in the county clerk’s office.”
The commissioners will meet next on July 11 for their regularly scheduled meeting.
