Scott County Board of Commissioners discussed a Scarecrow community involvement event at their regular meeting on Sept. 4.

Commissioner Randy Julian said he had spoken to Scott County Visitors Commissioner Executive Director Chris Wakeman about a way to draw tourism to Scott County but also have it be a fun way for residents of Scott County. The idea is to have residence of Scott County have scarecrows for decoration and to be able to be on a list so others can judge the scarecrows in a competition, he said.

Julian said that Visitors Commission would receive a list of participants and address that would be distributed to local businesses to have tourist and residence of Scott County to see the scarecrows and vote for their favorite through the month of September and October.

There will also be a prize for the scarecrows that place, said Julian, first would receive $500, second would get $300 and third would get $150. He added the funds for the money prize is going to be donated from Coomer’s Towing of Austin.

Commissioner President Mike Jones said that he supported the idea but was concerned about how the voting was applied to the contest.

The commissioners agreed to use $1,000 of their funds to go to the Visitors Commission for the advertising of the event.
