On Friday, Aug. 4, Morgan Richey, 37, of Scottsburg was sentenced to 40 years in prison following a hearing in which Special Judge, Larry Medlock, of the Washington County Circuit Court heard arguments from both the Prosecution and the defense.
This sentence was the result of a 3-day jury trial earlier this year in which Richey was convicted of dealing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, and was found to be a habitual offender, said Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens.
On March 24, 2022, officers with the Indiana State Police and the Scottsburg Police Department went to Richey’s South Second St. residence to serve an arrest warrant on Richey. After placing her in custody, officers discovered a large amount of methamphetamine within her home.
During trial, Trooper Kyle Taylor of the Indiana State Police testified that he had been involved in over 500 drug cases during his career throughout the State of Indiana, and that the amount of methamphetamine located in this case was the most he had ever encountered in Scott County.
In one container within the home officers located over 140 grams of methamphetamine. Other drugs were also discovered during the encounter along with additional methamphetamine.
Richey had a lengthy criminal history involving high level drug offenses, including convictions for dealing
methamphetamine twice in the past, according to Owens.
“Police in our community are working hard to get drugs off the streets, and our office is committed to taking drug dealers out of the supply chain and sending them to prison,”said Owens. “This is a substantial sentence, but one that was earned by the defendant. Richey was given multiple opportunities within the criminal justice system to correct her criminal behavior, but instead of learning her lesson, she continued, and even escalated that behavior.”
Deputy prosecuting attorney Mark Kiesler handled the prosecution which resulted in the conviction and sentence
