After the close of candidate filing at noon his past Friday, Republican and Democrat primary battles will be contested May 5.

In both Jackson and Scott County there is a Democratic primary battle for Indiana’s 9th congressional seat between James H. (Jim) Graham, Brad Meyer, Tim Peck, and Keil L. Roark.

Republicans Roger Drew, Mark D. Holt, and Dustin Seward are vying for the nomination for sheriff in Jackson County.

There is a contested primary for the District 3 County Commissioner representing Carr, Owen, Pershing and Salt Creek Townships in the western part of the county. Appointed incumbent Andrew Stauffer is facing a challenge from Roger Bane.

There will be primary races for two of the four district county council seats In District 1 composed of Brownstown, Carr, Owen, Pershing and Salt Creek Townships, Jake Brown and Harold G. Davidson are seeking the Republican nomination. For the District 3 seat representing Hamilton, Redding, Jackson 1 East and Jackson 2 East it will be a three-way race between Brandon Joray, Bri Roll and Jonathon Tabor.

In the GOP race for Pershing Township Trustee, incumbent Sharon Yost faces a primary challenge from Chris Gilbert. For the GOP nomination for Brownstown Township Trustee, incumbent Melanie Pottschmidt is facing a primary challenge from Teresa A. Stuckwisch.

In Scott County, a Republican primary is set for State Senator District 43 between appointed incumbent Randall D. Maxwell and Joe Volk.

Incumbent Republican County Auditor Jennifer Rode-Hamelman is facing a challenge from political new-comer Kristie Richie Johnson for the GOP nod.

In the Scott County Sheriff’s race former Scottsburg Chief of Police Scott Zellers and Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Mayer are seeking the Republican nomination.

There will be a GOP primary race for Scott County Council District 3 where incumbent John Collins is facing a primary challenge from James (Brad) Stotts.

There will be a GOP primary battle for Lexington Township Trustee between incumbent Danny Basham, Jack Cochran and Debby Hubbard for the nomination.
