Five area men who were charged with dealing drugs got a not-so-friendly reminder of Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin’s commitment to identify and eliminate drug dealers from their neighborhoods.

The latest drug dealer identification and subsequent eradication action, labeled “Operation Friendly Reminder” resulted in five more arrests by Scott and Jackson County men facing drug dealing charges.

Goodin said that Scott County Deputies Paul Clute and Ryan Ware led this recent operation, resulting in multiple undercover drug buys.

“Citizen tips are key to our success,” said Goodin. “We can’t do what we do without the support and assistance from our citizens. I am grateful to serve as the Sheriff of Scott County, where all citizens are committed to making our home the safest county in America to live and raise a family”.

Arrested as a result of Operation Friendly reminder were

•David Parks, 35 of Seymour was arrested for dealing in narcotic drug and a warrant for escape.

•Gregory Poggel, 29 of Crothersville was arrested for dealing in methamphetamine and dealing in narcotic drug.

•Leroy D. Whitaker, 55 of Scottsburg was arrested on two counts of dealing in methamphetamine. Whitaker is currently incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail, awaiting extradition to Scott County on the new charges.

•Alexander J. Riley, 23, Medora was arrested for dealing in methamphetamine and manufacturing methamphetamine, Riley is also currently incarcerated at the Jackson County Jail, awaiting extradition to Scott County on the new charges.

•Shawn D. Hensley, 31, Crothersville was arrested on two counts of dealing in methamphetamine.

On Saturday afternoon, Jan. 1, Deputies Skylar Thompson and Andy Brown responded to a residence in Scott County for a domestic situation involving a man with a firearm. When they arrived and announced their presence, the man barricaded himself inside with two females.

The barricaded was later identified as Gary Spicer, 61, of Scottsburg, a co-occupant of the residence with the two females. The two females were both able to escape the residence safely and Spicer was eventually arrested after surrendering to deputies.

A search of the residence revealed a handgun and an believed improvised explosive device.

Spicer was charged with criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, maintaining a common nuisance, possession of methamphetamine, and intimidation with deadly weapon.

Neither females involved was arrested or charged.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28, Wanda Deaton, 61 of Scottsburg, was arrested on warrants for public intoxication, possession of methamphetamine, criminal trespass, and driving a vehicle after lifetime suspension.

On New Year’s Eve, Benjamin Bowling, 39 of Salem, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, visiting a common nuisance, burglary, auto theft, and theft.

That same day, Michael Weston, 48 of Scottsburg was arrested for possession of paraphernalia, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, possession of controlled substance, burglary, auto theft, and theft.

Ronald Smith, 21 of Scottsburg, arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of controlled substance, possession of a syringe, maintaining a common nuisance, and possession of paraphernalia.

On Monday, Jan. 3, Michael Smith, 52 of Lexington was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and escape.

Also arrested that day were Trista Broadus, 28 of Lexington, charged with possession of a narcotic drug, neglect of a dependent (2 counts), and escape.

Ronald Stoner, 53 of Scottsburg, was arrested Jan. 3 for possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, resisting law enforcement, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, and maintaining a common nuisance.

On Thursday, Jan. 6, Nathaniel Prosser, 37, of Walnut Cove, NC was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.
