Tanner’s Market Hopes To Open In April
The site of a long line of family-owned grocery stores is being renovated for a new generation of food sales.
David & Teresa Tanner of Henryville are purchasing the former Secret Garden florist shop at the corner of Main and US 31 in Crothersville and plan to open Tanner’s Market later this spring.
Crothersville has been without a full service grocery since the Super Value closed over 10 years ago.
The Tanners, owners of Adams’ IGA and Tanner’s Store in Henryville have over 20 years experience in the grocery business.
David’s grandparents started Adam’s IGA in that Clark County community. “I grew up in the business,” said Tanner. He became owner of the IGA in 1998.
Asked about the difficult economic times and his decision to expand into Crothersville, Tanner said, “Granted the economy is pretty bad now, but if you can make it in a bad economy, you should be okay when things turn better.”
Considerable renovations are going on now and a 1,000 square foot addition to the building is planned at the Crothersville location. Despite the ambitious plans Tanner said his goal is to have the new store open for business sometime in mid-April.
He said it will feature a full line of meats, produce and staples.
For many years, the location at the corner of Main & US 31 was home to Briner’s Grocery, later Dallas McKain ran a similar business followed by Brumett’s Grocery.
David & Teresa Tanner are the parents of three children, sons Calon, 16 and Cameron age 10, and daughter Kendra, 13; a future generation of potential grocery entrepreneurs to carry on the family business.
