A 36-year old Madison man was charged with attempted murder, robbery and gun related felonies after a shooting on the morning of Sunday, Dec. 1.

Anthony J. ‘AJ’ Reed was incarcerated after a report of a man being shot in a drug dispute on State Road 256 near Whitsitt Road in eastern Scott County. The victim, Teddy Hammon also of Madison, had been shot in the shoulder and elbow with a .22 caliber handgun.

Scott County Sheriff Deputies, Indiana State Police and Austin Police officers responded after it was reported that the shooter fled the scene in a dark in color SUV. Deputies were able to locate the SUV at an address on in the 2600 block of N. Coffee Pot Road in rural Austin. 

Reed was transported to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. Authorities reported that Reed admitted to being the shooter after being involved in a dispute over drugs and whether the Hammon was a police officer which Reed had accused him of being.

Hammon was transported to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.

Reed was incarcerated at the Scott County Jail, charged in Scott Circuit Court with attempted murder, robbery with bodily injury, robbery while armed with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness, pointing a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, and obstruction of justice.

Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens also filed a notice of intent to seek habitual offender status on Reed. Last Friday, Scott Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount ordered Reed to be held without bond until his initial hearing.
