A Crothersville woman died in a single car crash Friday afternoon, April 17, shortly after 5 p.m.
According to Jackson County Deputy Adam Nicholson, Cheri A, Mankiller, 56, of Crothersville was driving south on US 31 just north of County Road 80 N when she drove off the west side of the road, down an embankment and struck a tree head-on in the northern part of Vernon Township.
Nicholson said when he arrived at the scene, the engine of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu was still running and the doors were locked. The officer broke out the back driver’s side window to gain access.
Nicholson said he was unable to find a pulse. Jackson County EMS hooked up a heart monitor and was unable to detect any heart activity.
Jackson County Coroner Roger Wheeler pronounced Mankiller dead at the scene of the accident.
A witness following Mankiller’s southbound vehicle said that the woman’s auto left the west side of the roadway and never reduced speed. The witness reported that it didn’t appear that the vehicle slowed prior to impact with the tree.
Funeral arrangements for Mankiller are being handled by Adams Funeral Home in Crothersville.
