One Jackson County veteran and his family had an extra reason to be grateful this past Thanksgiving. Matthew & Jaelyn Cunningham were selected as the recipients of a free roof replacement from Royalty Roofing of Seymour.

The rural Medora veteran was drawn as the winner of a free roof from Royalty Roofing in our recognition of Veterans’ Day, said Kevin Gabbard, a company spokesman.

Cunningham served in the National Guard from 2007-2013 as a construction engineer. He said was inspired to serve his country after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

His service included time spent in Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, and Afghanistan. The Jackson County veteran is now fully disabled with PTSD as well as being a survivor of acute promyelocytic leukemia which he was diagnosed with in 2021, Gabbard related.

The Royalty crew showed up Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, removed the old roof covering and had a new dimensional shingle roof on the nearly 2,000 sq. ft. home installed by the end of the day.

“This was the first year for us to have this contest and it is our intent to make it an annual Veterans’ Day event as a way of saying thank you for their service to our country,” said Gabbard.

Based in Jackson County, Royalty Roofing has been a leader is residential, commercial and industrial roofing since 1986. The nationally known roofing company was established by Crothersville native Andy Royalty, the company’s President & CEO.
