Detectives from the Indiana State Police are investigating the death of an inmate who was being held in the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown.
Around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, jail staff responded to a holding cell to check on the inmate, Antonio Delmar Fox, 35, of Jackson, Mississippi. While the jail staff was speaking with him, Fox collapsed inside the cell. Jail personnel began administering life saving measures to Fox, who was the only occupant of the cell. Jackson County EMS was called and provided further medical care. Before transporting Fix to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour where he was soon pronounced deceased.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department requested Indiana State Detectives to investigate the death of the inmate.
An autopsy was to be performed in Hamilton County, Ohio. At the conclusion of the state investigation, the case will be presented to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Fox was arrested March 29 by Crothersville Police on charges of driving while intoxicated, possession of narcotic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held on a $1,500 cash only bond.
Fox is the third inmate to die in custody at Jackson county Jail in the past three years. Ta’Neasha Chappell of Louisville, KY died while an inmate in the jail in July 2021. Joshua McLemore of Seymour died while an inmate in August 2021.
In 2023, Jackson County paid $7.25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by McLemore’s family. A lawsuit filed by Chappell’s family is ongoing.
