Mayoral rematches of four years ago in Austin and Scottsburg had the same results in last Tuesday’s municipal election.
In Austin incumbent Democrat Roger Hawkins easily defeated Republican Jonathan Lee White 403-259.
In Scottsburg incumbent Democrat Mayor Terry Amick won another term over former Republican mayor Bill Graham 761-604.
Scottsburg clerk-treasurer Jan Hardy was unopposed in her re-election bid and was the highest vote getter of the day with 971 votes.
In the Scottsburg City Council Dist. 2 race, Democrat challenger Richard Cozart defeated incumbent Republican Bill Hoagland 118-100.
Democrat Mark Nicholson defeated Republican Monty Stutsman 200-192 in the Dist. 3 Council race.
The lone bright spot for the GOP was Kevin Smallwood defeating Democrat Eric Lowry 266-220 for the District 4 council seat.
Republicans Christian Evans (938) and Timothy Hall (189) were unopposed for the respective at-large and Dist. 1 council races.
In Austin races, incumbent Democrat clerk-treasurer Chris Fugate won re-election over Lonnie Noble Sr. by a 377-273 tally.
For the two City Council at-large seats, Democrats Trevor McIntosh (342) and Brandon Glenn White (283) won election over Republican Bill Hill (249).
In the Dist. 1 council race, GOP’s Ryan Gabbard defeated Democrat Jimmy D. Turner 126-83.
Democrat Joe Smith defeated Republican Norma G. Morris 140-73 for the Dist 2 council seat.
In a rarity Republican James Shelton and Democrat Staci Mullins tied at 107 each on election night in the District 3 council race. Since election night results are unofficial until certified sometime next week, late delivered mail-in absentees could yet be counted. Then each candidate could ask for a recount.
If after that the results remain tied, Indiana law allows for the Austin City Council to determine a winner of the District 3 race by Dec. 31.
