School officials held at ceremonial groundbreaking for the $20-million Austin Elementary School renovation project on Thursday. Scott County School District 1 board members and school officials took part in the ceremony with all of Austin Elementary students looking on.
The project calls for the razing of the 1930’s era two-story brick building and construction of a new energy efficient, and student security focused structure.
Skillman Corporation of Indianapolis is the project construction manager and has already begun early demolition of the former Austin High School. Once students are dismissed for the summer, heavy equipment will be brought in to demolish and crush the masonry structure to aid in transportation off the premises.
The 18-month construction project is hoped to be completed for students to use the new facility for the 2022-2023 school year.
