It was a big event at the Freetown Museum on Saturday when a long sealed (and nearly forgotten) time capsule was opened.
The wooden box was sealed in the Y2K year of September 2000 with instructions for it to be opened in 2025. However, forgetfulness and other obligations delayed the opening a year to this past Sept. 19.
Russell Fritz, who originally built and sealed the box did the honors of opening and revealing the quarter century stored momentos, history and memorabilia.
A number of advertising articles from Freetown businesses (some still open, some long closed) and letters and artwork from students at the now closed Freetown Elementary, as well as hymnals and Bibles from Pershing Township churches were among the uncovered history finds.
The Freetown Museum, located at 4784 W State Road 58, is open to the public free of charge from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Friday and Saturday.
