A plan to help Austin residents clean up their homes, sheds and yards of unwanted items is under way in the community.
Officials recently announced that any person showing proof of residency in the City of Austin will be able to bring their unwanted items to the Street/Sanitation Department site off York Road and dump it free of charge this Thursday and Friday & Saturday, Oct. 13, 14 & 15; and next Thursday and Friday, Oct. 20 &21.
Hours each Thursday and Friday will be from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
“We offer these days as a way to help residents get ready for winter and to discard items that are no longer of use to them. This free clean-up is only available to residents living inside the city limits of Austin. When you bring your unwanted items, please make sure you bring proof of residency such as an electric, water, or sewer bill,” said Mayor Roger Hawkins.
“This free opportunity will also help the City of Austin maintain standards of cleanliness. We do not want to fine anyone who is doing their best to maintain their property; however, we do have ordinances that will allow us to do so, if necessary,” Hawkins added.
Regular household items will be accepted as well as furniture, mattresses, small appliances that do not use Freon, clothing, and TVs.
Items that will not be accepted include computers, laptops, printers, paint and varnishes, household and vehicle oils, tires, discarded roofing and contractor debris. Contractors cannot participate in this free clean-up. If Freon-using appliances are brought, each must be tagged to prove that the Freon has been removed.
No recyclables will be accepted during this free clean-up.
Anyone with questions about what can and cannot be accepted can call the Mayor’s Office at 812-794-6646.
