Fireworks play an important part in next Wednesday’s 4th of July celebrations but if they are not handled properly they can be dangerous, causing serious burn and eye injuries. Scott Memorial Hospital reminds area residents of some simple steps you can take that will protect you and your family while celebrating.
• Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.
•Always light fireworks outdoors in a well ventilated area.
•Read and follow all warning and instructions.
•Be sure other people are far away before lighting fireworks.
•Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.
•Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
•Keep a bucket of water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
•Never try to alter or combine fireworks.
Before heading out the door, also remember to pack sunscreen and lots of drinks to prevent dehydration.
