A fire which began in a backyard shed spread to the residence and destroyed the home of Harold & Doris Wineinger of 12173 E. State Road 250 east of Uniontown Saturday.
The Crothersville-Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene at 1:55 p.m. with a report of a shed fire.
By the time the department arrived six minutes later, the fire had spread to the roof and attic of the Wineinger home.
According to department Capt. Lynn Howard, Jackson-Washington Fire Department was summoned for mutual aid.
Howard estimated the loss around $100,000.
The Wineingers were not at home at the time of the fire. Howard said the cause of the fire is not suspicious but that the state fire marshal has been called to investigate.
“When there is a total loss like this, we wanted to have the fire marshal investigate to confirm our own investigations as to the cause,” Howard said.
Howard noted that this is the first structure fire with significant damage in quite some time.
“We have been fortunate in Vernon Township that these kinds of fires are a rarity for us,” he said.
The fire department remained on the scene until about 6:15 p.m.
