What started off as a routine traffic stop for an expired license plate, ended up with a Deputy man going to jail for dealing methamphetamine and other drug charges.

Scott County Sheriff’s Deputy Kyle West was on patrol on Highway 356 near Vienna on Thursday, Sept. 25, when he spotted a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck with expired plates. As he was pulling the vehicle over, he saw the driver making rapid movements inside the cab.

Riley James Nasby

The driver, Riley James Nasby, 28, of the 1200 block of West State Road 250 in Jefferson County, couldn’t produce the truck registration. Deputy West had Nasby to step out of his vehicle while West’s K-9 Partner, Charley, did a free air sniff of the vehicle.

The dog alerted for drugs around the passenger side doors, West reported.

Searching the truck’s cab, Dep. West located a black bag with two baggies of white crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine. Also found was a pill bottle containing Adderal for which Nasby did not have a prescription, according to the probably cause affidavit. Also in the pill bottle was a quarter size white substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.

Officers confiscated a total of 42.8 grams (over 1.5 ounces) of meth from Nasby’s truck cab, according to the court document.

Before being booked into Scott County Jail, Nasby told Deputy West that he wanted to talk with him. West took the Deputy man into the nearby interview room. According to the court document, Nasby told the officer that he had purchased a half ounce of meth from a man in Hanover for $180,

Nasby is facing felony charges of dealing methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a legend drug as well as an infraction for driving with expired license plate.

Because of prior arrests, Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens filed notice with the court to seek habitual offender status on Nasby.

Scott Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount set Nasby’s bond at $100,000 full cash only. Nasby remains incarcerated as of the newspaper deadline.
