A Monarch butterfly feeds among some zinnias in a Jackson County garden. Last week, for the first time, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the monarch to its “red list” of threatened species and categorized it as “endangered” — just two steps from extinct.
The United States has not listed monarch butterflies under the Endangered Species Act, but several environmental groups believe it should. In recent years, many individuals and groups have begun planting milkweeds the butterfly’s caterpillars need in an effort to slow the loss. Two major contributors to the monarch’s rapid decline are pesticides and loss of habitat.
