A 46-year-old Crothersville man attempting to break up a fight in a bar late Saturday night, June 26, wound up hospitalized in Louisville with stab wounds to the abdomen, Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies report.
Two men were arrested in connection with the incident, reported just before midnight Saturday and caught on video surveillance, according to a Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.
The incident led to the arrest of Tommy A. Pennington, 66, of Austin on a felony charge of battery causing serious bodily injury and attempted murder. Also arrested was Jeremy Peters, 46, of Crothersville on a misdemeanor charge of battery, started with a fight between the two men at the Thirsty Sportsman Bar on North Armstrong Street in Crothersville.
Meyer said based upon video and statements from witnesses, the fight started when Peters punched Pennington. That’s when two men, including the man who was later stabbed, got involved by trying to break up the fight.
The stabbing victim was trying to get Peters away from the fight when Pennington walked up and made a swinging motion with a knife and cut Peters, Meyer said.
The man then grabbed Pennington to try to get him to stop fighting and that’s when Pennington stabbed the victim with the knife several times in the abdomen, the sheriff said.
After the stabbing, Pennington walked away from the fight and was found when county Reserve Officer Greg Murphy and county Officer Alan Jones arrived, according to the sheriff.
The stabbing victim was treated by personnel with Jackson County Ambulance Service before being flown to University of Louisville Hospital.
Peters’ cut did not require hospitalization, and Pennington also sustained a small cut from his own knife but was not hospitalized, Meyer said.
Peters was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:26 a.m. Sunday and released on $355 bond at 1:53 a.m. Monday while Pennington was booked into the jail at 4:19 a.m. Sunday and was being held on a $150,005 bond.
