Scott County Board of Commissioners discussed their concerns of trash being left outside the allotted time at the trash sites during their regular meeting on Dec 6.
Commissioner President Mike Jones said a camera had been installed at the trash site near Stacey’s Marathon off Highway 256 and Hardy Lake Road east of Austin.
The concern is that there are residents in Scott County who are leaving their trash before 3:30 p.m. and after 7 p.m., which can cause the county a fine of $25,000 from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM)
Jones said that he was only one vote on the commissioners, but if the county was to receive a fine from IDEM, he would vote to stop the trash sites. Residents can be fined $1,000 (by the county) if they are caught leaving their trash earlier than the permitted time, he said.
Scott County Attorney Zack Stewart said, “The fines are just the state. They also have the option to say ‘we aren’t going to authorize Scott County, we aren’t going to grant you your permits to operate’.”
Commissioner Randy Julian said, “Between the fines or IDEM pulling our permit, if Scott County don’t follow the rules, they are taking the decision out of our hands.”
