Mayapples are among the greenest plants covering the forest floor this time of year. But their name is a misnomer as it is the flower that appears in early May, not the “apple”. The fruit or “apple” is produced early summer and ripens later in summer.
Regionally, the plant is also called hogapple, Indian apple, mayflower, umbrella plant (because of the shape of the leaves), wild lemon, wild mandrake or American mandrake.
