An Austin man attempted to elude Crothersville Police Sunday evening, July 21, which resulted in a felony charge of dealing in methamphetamine.
Richard E. Smith, 53, of the 1200 block of York Road in Austin is facing charges in Jackson County of dealing methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and resisting law enforcement.
Crothersville Police Officer Derrick Minton was on patrol around 7:10 p.m. July 21 when a license plate check came back to Smith who was wanted on a warrant out of Clark County.
When Minton tried to pull the vehicle over, Smith fled Crothersville going north to Uniontown before turning west onto State Road 250. Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies joined in the pursuit attempting to us stop sticks to apprehend Smith.
Minton reported that at times Smith drove over 100 mph and drove left of the center line. At State Road 250 & County Road 350 E, Smith struck stop sticks deputies deployed.
Smith continued on SR 250 and lost two tires at SR 250 & 39 curve. Smith continued towards Brownstown before turning onto CR 100 at the county fairgrounds where his vehicle came to a stop.
After apprehending Smith, officers found a baggie with a while crystal substance in his pocket which later tested positive for over 26 grams of methamphetamine. A THC pen, a rolled marijuana cigarette and a set of scales were found in Smith’s vehicle.
Smith was transported to Jackson County Jail where he faces charges dealing methamphetamine, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, and possession of marijuana.
At his initial hearing, Jackson Circuit Court Judge Richard Poynter send his bond at $10,000 cash only.
