The Jackson County Public Library has a seed library that was started in 2021. The seed library is a collection of heirloom seeds that anyone can take to plant and grow at home. A library card or library district residency is not required to participate.
The initial collection had seeds purchased with funds from the library’s endowment with the Community Foundation of Jackson County. This year, the collection has heirloom seeds (flower, fruit, herb, vegetable) purchased with non-print materials funds and donated by seed companies. Since supplies are limited, there is a limit of five packets per household each day, and there is no guarantee on availability. At this time, the library does not accept donations or saved seeds due to state seed law and regulations.
Seed packets are housed in old card catalogs at the Seymour and Crothersville libraries and are also available at the desk at the Medora Library. Ask any staff member for assistance.
Anyone interested in participating or with questions about the seed library can visit Information Services upstairs at the Seymour Library or the Crothersville or Medora libraries, email seeds@myjclibrary.org, or call Information Services at 812-523-INFO (4636). A web page is also available at www.myjclibrary.org/seeds.
