A father and son now face drug charges after the father tried to deliver drugs late last month to his son who was on an inmate work crew, according to Scott County Sheriff Jerry Goodin
Deputy Tim Applegate was supervising an inmate work crew in Scottsburg when he noticed a suspicious man circling the area where the inmate crew was working. Applegate saw the man enter and exit a restroom near the worksite and then abruptly leave the area.
Applegate requested assistance at the worksite from other deputies who located controlled substances in the restroom.
Their investigation into the incident revealed that Charles E. Simpson, 61, of Scottsburg reportedly planned the “drug drop” with his son, Justin Keith Simpson, 36, of Nabb who served on the work detail assigned to Deputy Applegate.
Sheriff’s Detective Donovan McCutcheon later that day located Charles E. Simpson and questioned about the incident. The elder Simpson was consequently charged with trafficking with an inmate, dealing marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and maintaining a common nuisance.
Scott Circuit Court Judge Jason Mount set his bond at $25,000.
Justin Simpson, who was awaiting trial on a DWI charge from May of this year, was removed from the Inmate Trustee Program and now faces a felony charge of trafficking with an inmate. Judge Mount set his bond at $35,000 on the trafficking charge.
“As a result of the deputies alert attention, no illegal substances made it into the jail facility,” said Sheriff Goodin.
