Tale a step back in time to Indiana’s pioneer days as your family enjoys experiencing the history and natural beauty of Southern Indiana at the annual Log Cabin Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge.
The free event is sponsored by the Muscatatuck Wildlife Society.
The family friendly activities will take place at the Myers Family Cabin and Barn honoring the people who made this property their home. The cabin & barn are preserved at the southern end of the refuge where visitors learn about pioneer and farm life in Jackson County back in the 1880s.
Activities including live old-time music by Allie Jean & Friends, historic storytelling, the Myers Cabin tour, pioneer demonstrations including blacksmithing, hickory nut shelling, chore-corral (where kids try chores from yesteryear), shuttle rides to the refuge’s closed area, and a free ham and bean lunch cooked on an open fire with homemade cornbread.
Log Cabin Day kicks-off National Wildlife Refuge Week (Oct. 13 – 19), when visitors may explore the refuge’s hiking trails, lakes, birding, wildlife and fall colors, along with visiting the nature center and bookstore/gift shop.
