The Scottsburg City Council approved the use of golf carts at their Aug. 12 meeting. Effective today, Scottsburg residents can drive golf carts on city streets after they are registered with the city and inspected by Scottsburg Police.
Annual golf cart permits are $25 and the vehicle must have operating head & tail lights, brake lights, turn signals and rear view mirror to be street legal.
The carts can only be operated by a licensed driver at least 18 years of age. Golf carts cannot be driven on city streets after 11 p.m. and before 6 a.m. Maximum permitted cart speed is 25 mph.
Golf carts are restricted to city streets and cannot be driven on state highway, sidewalks, non-paved areas, or the Scottsburg Multi-Use Trail.
Violation of the ordinance can result in fines and impoundment of the golf cart.
An abridged version of the ordinance can be found on page 2 of this newspaper or at www.crothersvilletime.com. The complete ordinance is available for public inspection at the Scottsburg clerk-treasurer’s office during normal business hours.
The city passed similar legislation in Aug. 2018 to allow ATV & UTVs (two passenger side-by-side 4-wheel vehicles) operate on city streets.
