Superintendent Terry Goodin confirmed that five elementary students have tested positive for COVID-19 which has resulted in three classrooms — a third grade, a fourth grade and a fifth grade — being quarantined for 14 days.
“I don’t want to have to cancel school and do everything virtual, so we’ll go until we can’t go anymore,” Goodin said.
Scott County School District 1 in Austin had all students doing virtual learning through this past Monday due to a high number of virus cases and students in quarantine.
Goodin said junior-senior high school Principal Doug Ballinger and elementary Principal Whitney Reinhart are making sure everyone follows proper hygiene, including washing their hands, using hand sanitizer and not touching their eyes or face after touching a common surface.
Jackson and Scott counties are currently at level orange for positivity, the protocol is 6 feet of distance and masks strongly encouraged. If they reach the highest level of red, 6 feet of distance and masks are required. The state’s color-coded system is updated each Wednesday.
There will be a COVID-19 vaccine clinic at the school next Wednesday, Sept. 1 and again on Sept. 22 for a second dose. The clinic, open to everyone age 12 & up who has not been vaccinated, will be from 3-6 p.m. in Classroon 315 at the school.
No appointment is necessary. There is no cost to receive the Pfizer vaccine. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult family member or guardian since consent is required.
