An approximate 3-acre parcel of vacant county owned land on the north side of Scottsburg will be the future home of The Scott County Community Garden. Featuring raised beds, fruit trees, and a pollinator garden, there will also be a sharing garden that residents can volunteer to help raise and distribute fresh produce to the Scott County Clearing House and any county churches serving free meals to the needy.
The community growing area, located on Rainie Drive east of the Scott County Health Department, was announced last week as a joint effort of the Scott County Commissioners and County Councilwoman Diane Mullins.
“We are in hopes that in the near future a play area can be added with playground equipment for the children as well as a stage where small ensembles can share music with others, and Community Theater can have a place for additional audiences,” said Mullins. “There will be ample room for Yoga and exercise to help keep Scott County residents healthy too.”
Commissioners Mike Jones, Randy Julian and John Lizenby said the effort will combine several county departments and agencies.
“We want to work with our local Purdue Extension office to develop educational opportunities for the gardeners so they can grow good, healthy produce to feed their families.” Mullins said.
The Articles of Incorporation are almost finished as is the rest of the paperwork to make the Community Garden a 501c 3, Not For profit Organization. “Work will begin soon to get the raised beds built so residents can get growing,” said Mullins.
The Community Garden has a Facebook page and if you are interested in renting a garden spot you can message them there or by emailing them at scottcountygarden@gmail.com
