When the Scott County delinquent property tax sale list was first advertised in August there were 98 parcels with back taxes owed. By the time of last week’s tax sale on Oct. 5 began, that list had been pared down to 33 after property owners paid taxes owed prior to the sale.

This was the first year the county conducted the tax sale totally online, said Scott County Auditor Tammy Johnson and the result was over 100 bidders, more parcels sold, and for higher amounts.

An increase in COVID cases and no place in the county courthouse to safely socially distance for a live auction prompted the county to move the delinquent tax sale online.

The 20 parcels sold owed a total of $52,353.86 in unpaid property taxes and fees. There were eight successful bidders who paid a total of $734,158.48 for those parcels.

 “The county is only interested in the taxes owed,” said Scott County Treasurer Missy Applegate. “The amount paid over the taxes owed will go into a surplus tax sale fund.”

“Last year’s sale offered 42 properties, but only 12 parcels were sold,” said Johnson. “This year, 33 parcels were listed for the final sale and 20 parcels were sold.  We feel this increase was largely due to the broader scope of potential bidders with an online sale.  The number of registered bidders was largely increased from years past, with approximately 100 bidders registering online.”

She explained that those properties sold last week can be redeemed by their owners by paying the taxes plus 10% for up to the next six months; after that the interest increases to 15%. Upon redemption, the surplus paid by the successful bidder will be returned to that bidder.

Thirteen properties failed to obtain the minimum bid of taxes owed.

The Scott County Commissioners can now decide whether to have a Commissioners’ Certificate Sale to sell the 13 properties that failed to receive a minimum bid for taxes owed. Typically, at a certificate sale the minimum beginning bid is $200.

Successful bidders included:

•Watson Homes LLC, Neil Watson of Highland Ranch, CO purchased one parcel

•Aikins Investment Property LLC, David Aikins of Indianapolis purchased one parcel.

•Sukunmoni Roth purchased one parcel.

•Dosokhum Roth purchased two parcels.

•Dorian Lee Shantell Terry of Austin purchased two properties.
