When the Jackson County delinquent property tax sale list was first advertised last month there were 144 parcels with back taxes owed. By the time of the tax sale last Thursday, Sept. 22, began at the courthouse, that list had been pared down to 17 after property owners paid taxes owed prior to the sale.

Those 17 parcels owed a total of $33,468.44 in unpaid property taxes and fees. There were 15 registered bidders with 8 successful bidders who paid a total of $399,705.79 for 12 parcels on which $23,760.57 was owed.

Five parcels failed to gain the minimum bid.

“The county is only interested in the taxes owed,” said Jackson County Auditor Roger Hurt. “The amount paid over the taxes owed will go into a surplus tax sale fund.”

He explained that those properties sold on Thursday can be redeemed by their owners by paying the taxes plus 10% for up to the next six months; after that the interest increases to 15%. Upon redemption, the surplus paid by the successful bidder will be returned to that bidder.

Five properties, three in Crothersville and two in Seymour, failed to obtain the minimum bid of taxes owed which totaled $6,101.33, according to County Treasurer Kathy Hohenstreiter.

Successful bidders included:

•Savvy IN LLC Vinod Gupta of Memphis Tennessee which purchased two properties for a total of $153,000.
