A rural Crothersville man remains in a Louisville hospital after being shot in the head by his grandfather.
Johnathon Douglas Lee Clark, 23, is in University Hospital in Louisville. He was shot in the right forehead by his grandfather, Oval Lee Clark, during an argument around 12:35 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.
Oval Clark told investigators he shot his grandson as they argued in the front yard of his home, 8299 S. County Road 850 East in the Bethany area of southern Vernon Township. He was taken to Jackson County Jail for questioning Friday but later was released with no charges filed.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Carothers said he does not expect charges to be filed against the elder Clark. The sheriff said the grandson had threatened his grandfather previously and when the shooting occurred.
The sheriff said that earlier in the week, police were called to the scene because the younger Clark was holding a knife to his grandmother’s throat. The grandfather was not home during that incident, which was reported on Wednesday.
“That fight started when the grandson wanted the grandmother to take him somewhere, and she didn’t want to do that,” Carothers said. “It escalated from there, but the family didn’t want to file charges.”
The matter was turned over to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office, Carothers said.
A probation revocation hearing for the younger Clark scheduled for later this month was postponed as a result of the shooting. Authorities said that he had been incarcerated with the Department of Corrections and was scheduled for a hearing to have his probation revoked as a result of probation violations prior to last week’s shooting.
