Glen Hess of Crothersville claimed the grand prize in the annual first ripe tomato contest.
The first official ripe tomato was duly noted & chronicled at 10: 13 a.m. on Saturday, June 12. It was eaten a short time later.
Hess said his secret is to get the plants out early and water regularly.
Hess’s prize is having his photo taken with the first red ripe tomato and claiming gardening bragging rights for the rest of the year.
