Structure fires in Crothersville and Vernon Township resulted in estimated damage of $1,759,500 during 2012, according to Crothersville-Vernon Township Fire Chief Ben Spencer. He delivered the 2012 statistics during the department’s annual appreciation dinner on Dec. 7 at the local fire station.
“This volunteer department spent over 1,435 hours on the scene of fires, vehicle accidents and medical runs so far this year,” Spencer told the crowd. Explained another way, local volunteers spent nearly two months of 2012 on the scene of fires, accidents an medical emergencies.
So far in 2012 the department was sent to 33 fires including 13 structure and 13 grass or woodland fires.
The department was dispatched on 186 medical runs including 139 medical assist with Jackson County EMS, 30 motor vehicle accidents involving injury along with 10 non-injury accidents.

During the meeting four local firefighters were recognized for their leadership in fighting fires and assisting area residents with medical emergencies. Named EMS 1st Responder for 2011 was Logan Isenhower and Derrick Minton was named EMS 1st Responder for 2012. Bobby Baker was named the Firefighter of the year for 2011 and Sally Deaton was named the 2012 Fire Fighter of the Year.
