The Jackson County Public Library’s Teen Advisory Group hosted a Teen Read Week Essay, Short Story and Poetry contest in October. This year’s theme, Created Equal, was also the theme for a set of books the library won through the National Endowment for the Humanities’ national campaign “We the People Bookshelf”. Entries for each category were judged by teens at the Teen Advisory Group’s November meeting.
“Created Equal” written by Faith Mysak of Seymour and “The Equality of a Man” written by Caylie Guinn of Crothersville tied for first place in the essay contest. Guinn won first place for her poem entitled “Truly Equal” and also won first place for her short story entitled “The Equal Essay”. Honorable Mention was awarded to Samantha Begley of Brownstown for her poem entitled “That Autumn Day”.
Winning entries are posted in the Seymour Library’s Teen Scene Room and at the Crothersville and Medora Libraries and on the Discovery Bus. Winners received a small prize and a copy of their winning entry.
The Library would like to thank all 104 teens who submitted entries for the contest. All participants may pick up their essays, short stories or poems at the Seymour Library’s Kidz Korner Help Desk.
